One thing here, is that the police presence is something else. Nowhere can you look without seeing a police officer in his green military fatigues, and generally you'll also see a few private security guards also roaming the street (they're the ones in blue). I guess part of it is because of the countries violent past, and the other part is because this is really a tourist mecca, that they stick around to make sure that order persists. You'll usually see the policia in vans in groups of 4 or so, on motorcycles and scooters, or my favorite: dune buggy's.
