Started getting ready for real aruond 5 in the morning. Because, as my boss says, if it wasn't for the last minute, nothing would ever get done. None the less, I was out the door by 7:15 and at the Fort Lauderdale airport 35 minutes later. Checked in, hit the duty free store, purchased a "plethora pack" of scotches and a carton of cigarettes for the journey...
(oops. Picture didn't rotate. But i've got myself pints of Johnny Walker Black, Green, Gold and Blue, all for the price of $99!).
The flight - completely uneventful and not quite 3 hours.
We landed, deboarded the airplane and walked across the tarmac. I just followed the guy ahead of me, assuming if he didn't know where he was going, he wouldn't be walking so fast. Got to customs, also a breeze. Though I admit, I'm taking the easy way out by travelling with a girl that speaks spanish, so really, I have no idea what was being said.
We got to the baggage claim, found our bags, and went outside to find our ride. I'd arranged for the hotel to send a ride, so for the first time in my life, i walked out of the airport and saw a woman holding a sign with my name on it. I nodded to her, she yelled something to the baggage guy walking next to me, who then told Danielle something, which she then translated to: "she's going to get the car, she'll be right back".
Which she did. So the baggage guy loaded our stuff, and i tipped him 30,000 COP. I'm not sure what the translation is. I think like 15 dollars.
We drove a few miles, through a few short streets and by the beach. The taxi driver told danielle something and danielle then said the water is dangerous. Currents are strong, apparently. No worries. There's nicer beaches to be found.
We approached the walled city, and the first thing that struck me was how short the walls are. Maybe 20 or so feet. I thought they'ed have to be taller to ward of the pirates of yesteryear. But no.
We got in the walled city through a little entrance, and as vast as i'd imagined it to be, it's actually incredibly cramped. The SUV's of the states would have a difficult time navigating around. But navigate we did and before long, we were at the hotel. The driver politely declined payment or even tip, saying it would be added to the bill. And the hotel had said the ride would cost 30,000 COP (that seems to be a recurring number), so again, no worries.
They buzzed us into the hotel, Danielle did all the talking in spanish, and we got to the room. She's been getting ready and i realized i wanted some scotch, so i borrowed her spanish dictionary to find the word for glass, and walked down to the lobby. Instead of trying to helplessly ask for a glass, I just said "english?" and the girl was like "of course!". Much easier!
So i got a couple of glasses (vasos) and am sitting in the breezeway with my netbook, pack of cigarettes and vaso with a decent size portion of johnny walker blue. Very relaxing.
but that's it for now. It's time to shower and go see what can be seen here!
